Fashion Throwback Thursdays: My Dad Devon Barrett in the 80s-90s

25 Feb 2016

My parents met working at a Sainsbury’s in Lewisham, South East London, in 1979, when they were a mere 16 years of age. They have been together ever since, seeing each other through some particularly wonderful (in my opinion) years of fashion. They carried a camera with them wherever they went and managed to capture these timeless gems in their journeys. As a young interracial couple living in turbulent times, I find these pictures show a surprising yet beautiful nonchalance that my parents had towards any critics of their lifestyle and ambitions. It is something my father has always possessed and definitely still carries with him today, refusing all stereotypes of what a black man can achieve in our society. He is well-read, well-spoken, well-travelled and consistently works hard to better his life and the lives of close family and friends. He remains an idol to me and his former dress sense has done nothing but enhance the love I have for this man. Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 17.15.51Devon, circa 1980, 18 years old.
These pictures were taken by my mum on a two-week holiday in Dartmouth. The top is supposedly borrowed from his older brother who was much more into fashion than him.

This was taken near Taunton in Devon at an aviation museum. Black, yellow and white sweatshirt from Top Man, trainers are Nike.

My parents were staying at my maternal grandparents’ house in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Plain black top and snow-washed jeans are both from Top Man.

My parents having a party at their flat in East Dulwich, London. Dad’s wearing some corduroy trousers from Top Man and a mustard crew neck jumper (which someone else at the party was also wearing apparently). Mum is wearing a black button-up cotton top and a black cotton mini-skirt either from Dorothy Perkins or Topshop.

Taken by my mother on a holiday to Montego Bay, Jamaica. He wore this outfit pretty much the whole holiday, top from Top Man and the black swimming trunks had red, gold and green stripes down the side.

Devon, February 1992, 29 years old.

Mum and dad took a one-month holiday to travel around Australia and visit friends. This picture of him next to a termite nest was taken in Kakadu National Park, Darwin. T-shirt and shorts were both from Top Man and apparently he wore those shorts to death.

Devon, February 1992, 29 years old.

This was taken in Melbourne. He had several white t-shirts from M&S Men’s that were all identical. Jeans were from Top Man (duh) and he’s also sporting his favourite watch.

This is in St Margaret’s Wine Region, Perth. My parents stayed in a rented log cabin on the beach with some friends and said it was absolutely beautiful. Looking very ‘Fresh Prince’ dad is wearing a top and shorts combo from, you guessed it, Top Man.
